International Volunteer Day 2017

“Volunteer Act First. Here. Everywhere

The International Volunteer Day (IVD) is held each year on the 5th of December, and is designated to celebrate all the work and done by volunteers around the world. In Zimbabwe volunteer organizations gathered together on the 5th of December 2017 at Tose Respite Centre which caters for children with multiple disabilities.

Almost 200 volunteers from different organizations came together to show their solidarity for the work done by volunteers. The theme for this year was “Volunteers Act First. Here. Everywhere.” In line with the theme we carried out some voluntary actions like painting of hostels, cleaning, gardening and interacting with the disabled children to showcase what volunteers can do as first responders.

Tose Respite Centre also received various donations like clothes, groceries, books and toys that had been mobilised as part of the International Volunteer day. Volunteers also carried out their chores whole heartedly and demonstrated the true spirit of teamwork, networking and volunteerism.

It is also important to note that the event was also attended by the UNDP Country Director Mr Georges van Montfort who applauded the commitment and dedication done by volunteers to make the event a success. The event was coordinated by the “Volunteering for Development committee” with support from the United Nations Volunteer Programme (UNV) and Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO).
